Overview

Hiring a domestic helper in Hong Kong requires a valid employment visa issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department. This guide walks you through the entire process, whether you're hiring from overseas or transferring a helper locally.

Who Can Hire a Domestic Helper?

To employ a foreign domestic helper in Hong Kong, you must:

  • Be a Hong Kong resident
  • Demonstrate financial ability to employ a helper (minimum household income of HK$15,000/month or equivalent assets)
  • Provide suitable accommodation for the helper

Documents Required

For the Employer:

  1. 1Hong Kong Identity Card — Copy of your HKID
  2. 2Proof of Income — Latest tax return (IR56B) or employer's letter stating salary
  3. 3Proof of Accommodation — Tenancy agreement or property ownership proof showing adequate living space
  4. 4Standard Employment Contract (ID 407) — Signed by both employer and helper

For the Helper:

  1. 1Valid Passport — With at least 6 months validity
  2. 2Recent Photograph — Passport-sized
  3. 3Previous Employment References — If applicable
  4. 4Medical Examination Report — From an approved medical practitioner

The Visa Application Process

Step 1: Prepare Documents

Gather all required documents from both the employer and helper sides. At PY Cares, we help you prepare and verify all paperwork.

Step 2: Submit Application

The visa application is submitted to the Immigration Department of Hong Kong. This can be done in person or by post.

Step 3: Processing

The Immigration Department typically processes applications within 6-8 weeks. During this time, they may request additional documents or information.

Step 4: Visa Approval

Once approved, the visa label is issued. For overseas helpers, this is sent to the Philippine Consulate for endorsement.

Step 5: Entry to Hong Kong

The helper can then travel to Hong Kong and begin employment.
